I have been meaning to post this restaurant review of Thunderbolt, a restaurant with southern roots in the Echo Park neighborhood of LA. I wish I were able to be out dining this weekend, but we are staying in and safer at home. We are in the midst of the second closing of restaurant dining in Los Angeles in response to the surge in COVID-19 cases. Restaurants are currently closed for dining, but they remain open for takeout. Let’s keep patronizing our favorite restaurants so that they can survive!
A few months ago, I was invited to have brunch at Thunderbolt to celebrate their first anniversary. It was actually my first time out to brunch since quarantine, but I was pleasantly surprised by how relaxed I felt in the environment with the precautions they took to separate guests.
Thunderbolt specializes in mixology. They make all their own drinks and use creative methods like canning, bagging and freezing to make the process fun (and to allow you to easily take them home!). I had the Mezcalifornia, which is mezcal, chile California, clarified pineapple, blanc vermouth, tequila, lime acid, salt. It was refreshing and delicious. Next up – a mezcal negroni, which was perfectly balanced and divine.
The food was absolutely delicious. We had a delicious salad with juicy peaches and a balsamic reduction dressing. The salad was perfectly balanced and delicious on a hot day. I also ordered the fried chicken biscuit. Now I’m honestly not really a fried chicken sandwich person, but I have got to tell you this was one of the best biscuits (if not the best!) that I have ever had. The sandwich was not small and I ate every single bite. Such a perfect balance between the slight sweetness of the biscuit, the crunchiness of the fried chicken and spicy-ness of the serrano peppers. It was DAMN good!
I would definitely bring my husband and kids here for a Sunday brunch. They have nice bench seating that is separated by large pieces of plexiglass. Each bench has ample room for a family or group. I also love that the outdoor eating area feels intentional and not just thrown together.
I cannot wait to return!
