Waffles + Mochi on Netflix is the best new show for preeschoolers around! Waffles and Mochi are puppets who work in a supermarket and travel around the world searching to understand common kitchen ingredients. This show is funny, witty, diverse and engaging – for kids and adults alike. Neutral Ground, a production company founded by Former President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama, produced the series. Michelle is featured in the show, along with other well known stars from the food world. If you are a chef groopie, this is also the show for you.
Each episode focuses on a new category of food and goes in-depth to teach kids about its origin, how it’s grown or produced and how it is consumed in various cultures. We get to see the characters travel to Peru to see salt fields, pick different colors of cherry tomatoes in Mrs Obama’s garden and even try to grow food in outer space!
This show demonstrates to kids that trying new things from different cultures is fun. My son, Ellington, always says that he doesn’t like tomatoes, while my daughter loves them. While watching the episode exploring tomatoes, he yelled out “YUM” while watching one of the guests blend up a fresh gazpacho. He was also reminded that tomatoes are alllll over his favorite food – pizza. It doesn’t get better than that!
I am always on the hunt for educational shows for our kids (check out my list of toddler shows here). I don’t enjoy watching many children’s shows (sorry, being honest), but I enjoyed watching this show. My almost five year old also loved it and keeps asking if we can watch it again together. We voraciously watched three episodes in one sitting last week.
This show truly embodies what Hungry Hungry Mama is to me. Exploring food through fun with the whole family
