Whenever my cousin Anika comes into town, we primarily cook and drink wine together. Both of us love to cook and be in the kitchen together. Anika had the idea of making a whole octopus so we decided to do a bit spanish/mediterranean with the menu. We made Food 52’s recipe for whole octopus.
We went to Quality Seafood – an excellent fish market on the Redondo Pier in walking distance from our house. We bought one whole 2.5 lb octopus and 6 baby octopus. The octopus looks large, but it does shrink in cooking. To our pleasant surprise, the octopus were straight from Portugal. I also bought a few fish collars to marinate and grill for a quick, delicious and decadent meal.
We used Food 52’s recipe for grilled whole octopus with one variation – we added fresh oregano and thyme to the post-braise marinade. If, like us, you also grab some baby octopus, there is no need to braise them – throw them into the post-braise marinade and grill 3-5 minutes per side.
We also grilled zucchini, peppers and onions and made patatas bravas (Spanish style roasted potatoes). My friend Maya also came over and made a kale salad – they paired together perfectly. Deliciouso!
